279 days down, 1 to go... (give or take)

When I first announced on my blog that we had a baby on the way, I had 215 days to go... and now I am due tomorrow and wondering how many "bonus" days I will get of this pregnancy. Traci told me to think of it like I finished the race and now I am doing my victory lap. :)

Since this very well might be the last pregnancy update (for this one at least), I thought I would tell you guys what has been going on. Here is the news in a nutshell:

- Baby is still head down and very low - perfect position

- I am still going to the chiropractor every week, which has helped a lot with my hip and tailbone pain. I also have 2 pinched nerves (one in right hip, one in right arm) and going to the chiro keeps that pain (mostly) manageable, so I really look forward to my appointments.

- I have been having cramping, back pain and contractions for over a week. I don't love this, but I don't hate it either if it is "productive." But we don't really know for sure what is going on so I am choosing to think that all of the "preparing" for the labor will make the real deal go more smoothly.

- Everything is as ready as it is going to be. Baby's room done. Bags packed. Books read. Laundry done. House cleaned (more or less...). Presents bought, wrapped, shipped. Work done. We are just trying to enjoy every last moment of our twosome (or foursome if you count the pups) and eat out, watch movies, putz around on our projects, etc.

Basically, we are ready. And we would be happy if the baby came tomorrow (or tonight if he so chooses), but mostly I want him to be healthy and ready himself, so I am exercising what little patience I have and letting him get the party started when it suits him. Even if he decides to be born on Christmas day (I am telling you, kid, you will regret it later).

Thank you all for your support and encouragement when I needed it. I can't wait to share the good news with you all when I have some!! :)

Pregnancy Update

It's been awhile since I updated ya'll on the pregnancy, so here we go...

The countdown is on:

Less than 5 weeks to go, something like 32 days (if he comes right on time)

The tour of doctors:
I have been going to my midwife every other week (soon to be every week)...
I am going to a chiropractor every week (so that I can walk without crying)...
We have an appointment with our pediatrician next week...
We have a hospital tour scheduled for next week in case I need to transfer from the birth center...
I just had a dentist appointment...
I just had a physical for our life insurance application...

Note: the baby will NOT stop moving around. Movement is good, somersaults at 35+ weeks just shows that he has his father's sense of humor and likes to keep us guessing. Apparently it is normal for the baby to settle into a birthing position by 32 weeks and this flipping around so late is very unusual. At our appointment earlier this week his head was in 3 different places the 3 times they checked within a half hour span - we've got an active one! This also might mean that he is having trouble settling head down (which would be an automatic C-section, my worst-case birth scenario, boohoo). SO... this means more doctor's appointments:

I am going to start an acupuncture procedure called moxibustion, which is the best proven method of getting the baby to turn...
I also might need to see another chiropractor that specializes in a Webster technique to get the baby in a good position...
And if all else fails, I will be scheduling a version at the hospital where they try to manually turn him (from what I hear this is pretty painful and not always effective...hmmm)

Inside my head:
Physically, I am getting more uncomfortable between the lack of sleep and the joint pain and the ligament pain (my body seems confused by the fact that it has to expand to accommodate baby). I can suck it all up 95% of the time. It's just the other 5% when Ray needs to notice the meltdown coming on and pull out the foot massaging and sweet talking until I get a hold of myself.

Mentally, I am feeling like time is flying and a general brain-racing-holy-crap kind of feeling. Next week is my last week of work, which is a relief and is so stressful at the same time considering I am leaving all of my projects (the ones I have poured myself into for a year and a half) in other people's hands. It's not just some company I work for, it is my own business and I hate handing over what I have worked so hard for and not knowing what I will come back to (no, I don't have control issues...). That is not to say that I wish I was working right through, mind you.

My first week off is Thanksgiving week, so that week should be good relax and catch up on things around the house time. My Dad is coming to visit that weekend and part of the next week (and bringing our crib and other furniture - yay!) Then I am hoping to get some cooking and freezing in and tackle some of that growing list of things I wanted to get done before baby (i.e. switch my iTunes from my old desktop to my "new" (almost 2 year old...) laptop so I can get rid of said old desktop, which is currently in Baby's room). All that fun stuff that I have managed to resist doing for ages and is now biting me in the butt.

Then there is the whole trying to wrap my head around the fact that we will have a baby before we know it.... minor detail.

What I could not have lived without:
The other night when I woke up at 3am (for the third time that night and then never went back to sleep *sigh*), I found myself with lots of pondering time and started to think of the little things that I could not have lived without during this pregnancy. Just for fun, here is my list so far:
1. My rice heating pad. Oh how I love thee. It got me through many a round ligament spasm and now is used nightly on my tailbone and hips. Ray also made me a tube sock with rice that fits perfectly under my belly for the crampy days.
2. King-Size pillow. News flash: sleeping on your side when your hips/back hurt makes them hurt more. Using a large pillow between your knees helps. Any and all sleep aids are much appreciated (shout out to my eye mask and ear plugs, too!).
3. Apple Cider Vinegar. This is the best thing to tame my heartburn/acid reflux. Taking a shot does the job (but omg it burns going down!) so I prefer to mix 2 T with a half glass of water and chug. Works wonders.
4. Nightlight in the bathroom. That eerie familiar glow makes my night treks so much more pleasant.
5. Grapes, blueberries, cinnamon-raisin bread, Goat Hill soy cheese pizza with tomatoes and artichokes, Kashi granolas, Odwalla Superfood, the Karisa Oatmeal Special (oats, raisins, slivered almonds, ground flaxseeds, agave nectar/honey, rice milk), orange juice, Costco morning buns, Pregnancy Tea, Pepper Triscuits (good with tuna), vietnamese vermicelli, Kashi strawberry flax waffles, decaf coffee, cereal and rice milk (when the thought of food makes my stomach turn), Mom's taco salad... I think it is time for a snack over here...

Just a Normal Weekend...

It is such a relief after 2 months of travel and weddings and packed weekends to have one relatively normal one to look forward to. This weekend we are attending a Care of Mother & Child class through our birth center, going to pick out and order a chair for the baby's room, going to the bank to (finally!) change my name on my accounts and consolidate our bank accounts and going to a play at Intersection - one of my art space clients. Oh, and probably going to pick out tile for the kitchen (my home reno moratorium didn't last very long).

A glimpse into the monotony these days: I have been sick - cold or flu, I guess. Not ridiculously sick, but when you are 31+ weeks pregnant and already not sleeping or breathing easy, adding a stuffy nose and achiness and sore throat and nausea and all of that can really take a lot out of you. I am hanging on and trying to take it easier than normal so this can pass quickly. Ray has been very busy at work for the last month or so - lots of deadlines and lots of working late. On a more fun note, he is also getting a new rear bumper for Fiona (the FJ), which he has been looking forward to for quite awhile (and saving his fun money for!) :) Ikaika has been a pain in the butt throwing up and peeing and pooing all over. I don't know if he is some kind of sick or in a wretched state because one of the neighborhood bitches is in heat... either way, we are both very very very sick of cleaning up after him. (And some first time parents dread diaper changes... I think we won't be fazed!) Mela is the same ever-hungry chunky monkey cuddlebug as always.

Our families have been having some big changes lately, too.

Basi had his first day of Kindergarten: and Joel & Karen bought (and moved) into a new house: Congrats all around!

July winding down & halfway to Halo

I feel like nothing significant has happened to write about lately... odd considering that it has been a fairly eventful month. Here are some of the highlights of our current day-to-day:

* We found out we are having a little boy
* I turned 30 (*GASP*)
* Ikaika snorted another foxtail and had to have his annual emergency surgery
* Ray enjoyed his last 4-wheeling weekend pre-baby
* My mamma went to Brazil on a mission trip
* Ray's BFF Chris & his fiancee Maria had a bridal shower
* My 2 BFFs Traci & Laura are each going to have a baby next month
* We interviewed and hired my "maternity replacement" at my biggest client
* We started our childbirth classes
* I decided to switch doctors again...
* Our baby is now a cantaloupe
* I have been frantically trying to take continuing education classes because I need 120 hours to renew my CPA license in September
* Ray has developed pregnancy symptoms which mostly include cravings (sauerkraut?! vitamin water? who craves vitamin water?)
* Our neighbor backed into our new little tree and killed it (which was replaced after she backed into it the first time!)
* I finally went to the DMV and changed my license to my new last name & address
* We are now 20 weeks pregnant and halfway to the finish line (I fervently hope)

We have another ultrasound tomorrow, so with luck I will have some more Halo-Halo glamour shots to share with you soon!

xoxo

Mouse Trap (skip this one, Mom)

So, we live in an old house with lots of spaces for mice to sneak in. Both of our downstairs neighbors also have cats. That gives us odds of about 100% of having mice in our place (sorry, Mom, I told you not to read this!) Our big oaf dogs are only good for alerting us when we have a mouse in the house, not actually preventing the mice from entering nor catching the mouse once entered. We have tried humane traps, electronic deterents, inhumane traps... but these mice know better. I know this and generally accept is as a necessary byproduct of the old house. As long as they don't surprise me or appear in my bed or something I am kind of ok with the mice scurrying under the cabinets and such.

Well, I think we had a sickly or disabled or otherwise confused mouse this past weekend. Normally they are very fast and keep hidden, but Feeble Mouse went straight into the middle of the bathroom floor, crawled over my dirty clothes, over the bath mat and got caught in the shower curtain. Maybe it didn't notice the 2 cabinets calling for it to escape under. Anyway, this qualified as surprising me (I was standing on said bath mat) and I screamed and jumped onto the tub edge when I saw something furry coming my way (a reasonable response, I think). Feeble Mouse just sat there looking surprised, too. Where was mouse-stalker Ikaika when I needed him? After years of him stalking mice around the house and hours spent with his whole front half under the kitchen cabinets trying to capture the mouse... he was worthless in the moment of truth.

Fast forward to the next day: Feeble Mouse continues his dangerous escapades into the middle of the floor, but this time Ikaika finally catches him! Kai pounces, but didn't hurt the mouse and then with the mouse between his paws and under his mouth, Ikaika just sniffed him (further convincing me that Ikaika is an even bigger wuss than originally thought). The mouse escaped, but was slow (and stupid enough) to get caught by bucket-yielding Ray. Ray released him into the backyard, but I have little hope that the poor thing will make it long. Ah well, our house is again mouse free for the moment.

Sigh of Relief

The worst of my latest deadline is over, so I am breathing a sigh of relief. Ray and I are going away for the weekend and I think it is a good thing because I need to get away and forget about work for a bit. I am sure Ray is happy to get away, too, since he has had to do everything around the house.

We are going on this annual 4-wheeling/camping trip called Surf & Turf. I didn't go last year, but I guess we go down to Pismo Beach (south of SF, on the coast) and ride around & camp. 4-wheeling is not a passion of mine, but Ray loves it so much... I do like to do the camping part and Ray also promised we could stop at this place in San Luis Obispo that has the best fries ever. I am easy to please. Fries, a book or two, no email or phone, sounds perfect. Maybe I will even get my People mag today so I can take it with! :)

You guys really are getting the mundane, aren't you?

Rainy Day Saturday

I keep waiting for something interesting to happen so I can blog about it... nothing so far. So I will blog about all of the uninteresting.

Today it is raining in SF. Pouring at the moment. The rains started yesterday and even though I love sitting inside while it is raining, it is sad because it signals the end of our Indian Summer and the beginning of our winter (winter=rain all the time). But it might as well be raining because I have been working all day. One of my clients has their audit coming up and all of the paperwork is due this week. No one else seems to be able to do it and it is a disaster, so I have been frantically trying to clean up and prepare. It's not so bad because I have not forgotten all of the weekends and 18 hour days I worked for PwC while I was salaried - being hourly makes it so much easier to swallow!

Ray is replacing our front door lock/handle right now. His key stopped working last week, so we got another one made and it doesn't work either. The lock has always been temperamental, but last night we really couldn't unlock it for 10 minutes. In the rain. That was the last straw, so today a new lock is being installed. Oh, the charms of old houses sometimes... :)

What else is new... we found out Lisa and Drew are having a baby girl, so we are keeping the nieces and nephews ratio even at 3:3. We love other people having babies for us to play with! Speaking of... can't wait for Christmas!! It is coming quickly now that we have snuck into November. The countdown is on!

Well, I hope you guys are having a good Saturday, too. Sending love your way from the SF nest!
